Our Kid-Cats
Our youngest, Chiquita Banana, is a mix-breed, but she is still very cute. She enjoys chasing around a laser point, teasing her older brother, snuggling with her Dad, and numerous attempts on Ren's feet. She was born in Pennsylvania. Her birth Mom couldn't take care of her, so we adopted her. (She's smarter than she looks... We think.)
How the De Met the Re (De's Version)
I was nearing the end of PA school, just putting the final touches on our Masters project and studying like crazy for my boards. On Fridays and weekends, I would try to line up interviews. I was looking for a job in emergency medicine, and, if I couldn't find that, I was happy to 'settle' for primary care aka family practice. I had been all over Pennsylvania- Towanda, Paoli, Hermitage, Pittsburgh- and had lined up several interviews over the July 4th weekend. One was in a little 'burg near Hagerstown, Maryland. The husband-wife team of doctors had called and talked to me for a while, as well as one of the other PAs. I felt like I knew them before I even got there. They were the classic 'throw-back' docs, having come out of school, done time on an Indian reservation and then built their own practice from scratch. I really admired them and what they stood for, but wasn't sure I had a shot at the job. I was a new graduate, after all. And , complicating matters, as the 'lady doc' pointed out, was the small town itself. I was comparing this practice to emergency medicine outside of Philadelphia, after all. But as fate would have it, some options fell apart and other things developed, and I found myself starting work at the beginning of August.
Wondering about my options, shopping but not really looking to buy, I decided to check out my old online standby. There were unlimited camo-clothed boys, but just a few who caught my eye. One was this silly boy who wanted to hunt viruses. Poor boy, he had no idea how political that was and how sensationalized it had become. So when I made my profile, I put a little blurb in there about how I had been there-done that with regard to Ebola research, just to poke this particular bear with a stick. So we exchanged emails, photos of his Jeep (yeah, he's in love with it), a photo of me (he called me cute), and finally, that pinnacle of a first date, and the rest, is history.
How the Re Met the De (Ren's Version)
I had been living in Old Waynesboro for six years before I met De. It was a good life, but it was lacking something. That summer of 2006, I decided to do something about it. With my life consumed by work and school, I signed up on "match.com"...
That same summer, De was finishing Physician Assistant school in Pittsburgh. She applied and interviewed for a job in Waynesboro with a small Family Practice. At the suggestion of her new boss, and because the social scene in Waynesboro is, to say the least, lacking, De signed up on "match.com", too...
One day, as I was looking at my "matches", I noticed that a girl had posted on her profile that she had worked with deadly viruses and stuff. This caught my attention right away because I wanted to work with deadly diseases. Nothing peaks my interest like Ebola. I clicked on a link to "wink" at her. And she winked back.
After a few e-mails back and forth, she gave me her phone number. I was nervous when I called her for the first time, so I drove around and around in the jeep. We talked about a lot of things. It went well. Later that week, I drove my little brother to Nebraska. De was finishing up things in Pittsburgh. I text-messaged her all the way over and back, updating her on my location.
A few more phone calls and a few more e-mails later, we set up a date. We were going to go out on a Saturday. However, the Wednesday before our date, I called De and asked her if she would be interested doing something that afternoon. She was studying for her boards, but she still took some time off to go out.
Our first date was at Borders Bookstore. We talked and talked and talked some more. It was like chatting with an old friend. We had some coffee and talked some more.
And the rest is, as they say, history... Our story.
